DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Delegates from South Cotabato State College (SCSC) participated in the Molecular Biology Camp held from May 18 to 22, 2026, at the Philippine Genome Center Mindanao, University of the Philippines Mindanao Campus. The camp aimed to strengthen their knowledge  and practical skills in molecular biology, DNA extraction, DNA barcoding, DNA purification, next-generation sequencing technologies, and related laboratory
techniques.

The activity was conducted with support from DOST-PCIEERD under Project No. 1213539, highlighting the government’s commitment to advancing scientific capacity and innovation in the country.

The Molecular Biology Camp focused on DNA extraction techniques, DNA barcoding, DNA purification, next-generation sequencing equipment, and molecular biology workshops. Participants were introduced to laboratory procedures used in extracting and purifying DNA from biological samples, as well as the importance of DNA barcoding in species identification and biological research.

They also learned about the use of next-generation sequencing equipment, which plays an important role in generating large-scale genetic data for research. The session helped them better understand the connection between laboratory work and computational analysis. As part of the camp, the participants joined a laboratory tour at the Molecular Biology Laboratory,
where they observed various equipment, laboratory workflows, and safety procedures.

The activity also included lectures, workshops, and hands-on exercises that provided practical exposure to molecular biology techniques, including the basics of bioinformatics. Participants in the Molecular Biology Camp were Diofel A. Tampoy; Engr. Quint Ivan Pojas; Engr. Maria Gretel Sebastian; Jorge P. Esparagoza, MAgDev; Navel Kyla Balasa; and Mark Dave Eribal. The training provided SCSC delegates with valuable learning experiences in laboratory-based biological research. It also contributed to the continuing capacity-building efforts of SCSC in the fields of genomics, biotechnology, biodiversity research, and molecular biology.

This activity supports SDG 4: Quality Education by providing SCSC delegates with hands-on training in molecular biology, DNA techniques, sequencing, and bioinformatics. It also contributes to SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by advancing scientific
capacity through institutional and government-supported collaboration.
Special recognition is given to President Edward Lovell Brillantes, PhD, SUC President I, and Dr. Joebert C. Legreso from the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs for their support in enabling the participation of SCSC representatives in this significant training activity.
