SURALLAH, South Cotabato – South Cotabato State College (SCSC), in coordination with the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of Surallah, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Surallah, Municipal Engineering Office of Surallah and the SCSC Disaster Response Team, conducted a facility inspection on June 8 following the powerful earthquake that struck Southern Philippines earlier in the day.

The earthquake, which measured magnitude 7.8 and was centered off the coast of Mindanao, prompted damage assessments and safety inspections across affected areas in the region. Authorities also issued tsunami advisories and warned the public of possible aftershocks.

At SCSC, personnel from the MDRRMO, BFP, MEO, and designated college representatives jointly inspected academic buildings, offices, and other campus facilities to assess any potential structural damage and ensure the safety of students, faculty members, staff, and visitors.

The inspection formed part of the institution’s disaster preparedness and response measures aimed at ensuring that all campus structures remain safe for occupancy following the recent seismic event. According to the assessment team, the inspection focused on identifying visible cracks, structural defects, and other hazards that may have resulted from the strong ground shaking felt across parts of Mindanao. College officials emphasized the importance of conducting immediate post-earthquake inspections to mitigate risks and safeguard the well-being of the campus community.

The collaborative effort among the MDRRMO, BFP, MEO, and SCSC also highlighted the value of coordinated disaster response initiatives between local government units and educational institutions in promoting public safety and resilience.

The earthquake caused damage in several areas of Southern Mindanao, particularly near the epicenter, prompting local authorities and disaster response agencies to conduct rapid assessments and monitor developments, including possible aftershocks. SCSC assured stakeholders that it will continue to coordinate with concerned agencies and implement necessary safety measures based on the findings and recommendations of the inspection team.
